Custom acrylic display stands help retail and FMCG brands present products clearly, use limited shelf or counter space efficiently, and keep campaign branding consistent across stores.
They are commonly described as acrylic, Perspex® or PLEXIGLAS® displays. The right name matters less than the specification: the display must fit the product, the retail space, the expected handling and the campaign budget.
That is especially important in the current South African market. Retail activity has continued to grow, but trading conditions remain cost-sensitive. Stats SA reported that real retail sales increased by 2.3% year on year in May 2026, while specialised food and beverage retailers recorded a decline over the three months to May. For brand and procurement teams, this reinforces the need for display units that earn their footprint, survive the campaign and can be produced consistently at the required volume.

Acrylic is a rigid thermoplastic sheet available in clear, opal, frosted, tinted, mirrored and solid colours. It is popular for retail displays because it combines a clean appearance with considerable fabrication flexibility.
The main advantages are:
• High visual clarity: Clear acrylic allows the packaging and product to remain the focus.
• Lower weight than glass: This helps with handling, transport and installation.
• Design flexibility: Acrylic can be laser-cut, CNC-routed, drilled, bent, thermoformed, engraved and bonded.
• Branding compatibility: It can accept vinyl graphics, reverse-applied prints, direct UV printing, engraved detail and separate branded panels.
• Repeatable production: Once a prototype is approved, parts can be reproduced for multi-unit campaigns.
Acrylic is not the correct material for every application. It can scratch if it is cleaned incorrectly, and long unsupported shelves can deflect under load. Very high-impact environments may require polycarbonate, PETG, metal or a mixed-material construction. A competent fabricator should recommend the material from the use case rather than defaulting to acrylic.

Countertop displays place smaller products close to the point of decision. Typical applications include cosmetics, fragrances, wellness products, confectionery, sachets, cellular accessories and promotional packs.
A good countertop display should:
• fit within the retailer’s permitted footprint;
• keep each SKU faced forward;
• allow quick restocking;
• remain stable when customers remove products; and
• provide a clear position for the brand, price or promotional message.

Tiered displays improve sightlines by lifting the back rows above the products in front. They are useful for bottles, jars, perfumes, nail products, food presentation and small packaged goods.
The tier spacing should be based on the actual pack height and depth. Generic steps often hide labels or waste space, while a pack-led layout can make the full range visible from the shopper’s normal viewing angle.
Acrylic can be used for packaged-food stands, buffet risers, bakery covers, caddies and presentation trays. The specification must distinguish between a display that holds packaged products and a component intended for direct food contact.
Do not assume that every acrylic grade, adhesive or printed surface is suitable for direct food contact. State the cleaning method, temperature, exposure and contact requirement in the brief so that the appropriate material and construction can be assessed.

Clear cabinets and covers protect products, models and valuable items while retaining visibility. Depending on the application, they may include locks, hinged or sliding doors, removable covers, ventilation, lighting or wall-mounting points.
For load-bearing shelves, thickness alone is not enough. Shelf span, product weight, support positions and acceptable deflection must all be considered. See Moriah’s acrylic cabinets and shelves.
Freestanding display units can carry more stock and create a stronger branded presence away from the main shelf. They may combine acrylic with PVC, PETG, aluminium, steel, timber-based boards or printed panels to control cost and improve strength.
For a national rollout, the design should also consider flat-packing, assembly time, carton size, freight damage and replacement parts—not only the appearance of the first prototype.

Product launches, sampling campaigns and exhibitions may require plinths, ballot boxes, neck trays, sample trays, branded covers or modular displays. These units are often handled and transported repeatedly, so low weight, replaceable graphics and easy packing can be as important as appearance.
There is no universal thickness for a display stand. The correct gauge depends on the size of each component, its unsupported span, the load, the fixing method and the expected handling.
The following ranges are useful starting points, not final engineering specifications:
• 2 mm: Sign holders, small folded components, lightweight covers. Can flex over wider spans.
• 3 mm: Small countertop displays, dividers, trays, branded panels. Requires suitable support for loaded shelves.
• 4–5 mm: Bases, medium shelves, cabinets and robust countertop units. Weight and material cost increase.
• 6–10 mm+: Premium bases, long shelves, large covers and structural parts. May require CNC machining and additional edge finishing.
A shelf carrying glass bottles needs a different specification from a leaflet holder of the same width. Always provide the product weight and intended quantity per shelf.
Both cast and extruded acrylic can produce good retail displays, but they behave differently during fabrication.
Cast acrylic is often selected for engraving, premium finishes, thicker structural components and work requiring good optical quality.
Extruded acrylic can be cost-effective and consistent for thinner folded parts, sign holders and repeat production, depending on the design and process.
The best choice depends on the operation—cutting, bending, engraving, bonding or polishing—and the required finish. Ask for the grade to be specified where it materially affects performance.
Laser cutting is well suited to intricate profiles, lettering, slots and many thin-to-medium acrylic components. It usually produces a smooth, glossy cut edge, although the result depends on the acrylic grade, thickness and machine settings. It should not automatically be described as equivalent to a manually flame-polished or diamond-polished edge.
CNC routing is suited to thick sheet, large components, rebates, grooves, countersinks, pockets and mechanically interlocking features. The routed edge is normally machined rather than glossy and may require sanding, flame polishing or diamond polishing when it remains visible.
Many custom displays use both processes: laser cutting for detailed parts and CNC routing for structural or machined components.
The branding method should match the campaign duration, viewing distance and expected wear.
• Vinyl graphics: Cost-effective and replaceable; useful for short campaigns or changing messages.
• Reverse-applied graphics: Protected behind clear acrylic and less exposed to handling.
• Direct UV printing: Suitable for detailed colour graphics and repeat production.
• Laser engraving: Permanent and resistant to peeling, with a subtle premium appearance.
• Separate brand panels: Useful when the structure will be reused for several campaigns.
• Coloured acrylic: Creates durable colour blocks without relying entirely on printed coverage.
Provide vector artwork—normally PDF, AI, EPS or SVG—and specify Pantone, CMYK or other approved colour references. A digital colour reference alone may not match the appearance of printed ink, vinyl and coloured acrylic under store lighting, so physical approval samples may be necessary.
The most cost-effective display is not simply the one with the lowest unit price. It is the one that reaches stores intact, fits the allocated space, is easy to replenish and remains presentable for the intended campaign.
Before approving a design, consider:
• Transport distance: A Johannesburg-made unit may travel to distribution centres and stores across South Africa.
• Packaging: Clear acrylic shows scratches, so protective film, separators and carton design matter.
• Power interruptions: Illuminated units should fail safely and still communicate the brand when lighting is off.
• Cleaning: Specify approved cleaning products and avoid abrasive cloths or solvents that can damage acrylic.
• Repairability: Replaceable headers, graphics and high-wear parts can extend the useful life of the main structure.
• Rollout consistency: Confirm tolerances, assembly instructions and quality checks before bulk production.
• Budget pressure: Standardising material thicknesses and reducing unnecessary part changes can improve sheet yield and lower fabrication time.

Custom acrylic displays are normally quoted from the complete manufacturing requirement rather than a simple price per square metre.
The main cost drivers include:
• acrylic grade, colour and thickness;
• total material area and sheet yield;
• number of different parts and machine operations;
• bending, forming, bonding and polishing time;
• printing, vinyl, engraving or other branding;
• bought-in hardware, lighting or mixed materials;
• prototype and drawing requirements;
• quantity and repeatability;
• protective packaging and freight; and
• the required completion date.
A cheaper design can often be achieved without making it look cheap. Useful options include reducing the number of unique components, designing around standard sheet sizes, using a branded insert instead of printing the full structure, or strengthening a thinner component with folds and returns rather than simply increasing its thickness.
Send as much of the following information as possible:
• product photographs;
• exact product dimensions in millimetres;
• weight of each product;
• number of SKUs and facings;
• quantity to be held per shelf or compartment;
• maximum display width, depth and height;
• countertop, wall-mounted or freestanding placement;
• store type and expected shopper handling;
• required display quantity;
• branding files and colour references;
• campaign duration;
• delivery locations;
• required in-store date; and
• any retailer specifications or approval requirements.
A rough sketch and clear photographs are enough to begin. For accurate prototyping, however, Moriah will need physical samples or verified packaging dimensions before the design is finalised.
The exact process depends on the complexity and quantity, but a custom retail-display project commonly follows these stages:
Brief and feasibility review: Confirm the product, environment, quantity, budget parameters and deadline.
Concept and quotation: Develop the proposed structure, material approach and price basis.
Technical development: Finalise dimensions, artwork positions, joints and manufacturing details.
Prototype: Produce and load-test a sample where the project risk or rollout size justifies it.
Client approval: Approve the physical fit, appearance, branding and stability.
Production and quality control: Manufacture the approved quantity and check critical dimensions and finishes.
Packing and dispatch: Protect the units for collection, regional freight or delivery.
Lead time should be confirmed against the actual brief. Quantity, material availability, prototype changes, print approvals and bought-in components can all affect the programme. For fixed launch dates, work backwards from the in-store date and allow time for prototype revisions, approval, production and transport.

An existing unit can be used as a functional reference, but dimensions, materials, branding rights and intellectual-property considerations must be checked. Redesigning from the product and retail requirement often produces a better and more manufacturable result.
Use a soft microfibre cloth with mild soapy water or a cleaner specifically approved for acrylic. Avoid abrasive pads, paper towels and aggressive solvent cleaners, which may scratch, haze or crack the material.
A prototype is strongly recommended for a new design intended for a multi-store rollout, particularly where product fit, load, stability, branding or retailer approval creates risk.
